What makes a good breeder?

Dog breeding is a specialised area although it is not an exact science, but responsible breeding will ensure that any risks are reduced. We pride ourselves in our honesty and will always be happy and willing to offer any general advice to those wishing to breed or to those who wish to buy a new puppy from any breeder in the future. We are not frightened to recommend other breeders who we know and have a similar responsible mindset. Sometimes impartial advice can help make the right choices. This is why it is so important for you to go to a reputable breeder when choosing a puppy. Good breeders will carefully choose a brood bitch or stud dog on the basis of quality relating to the breed standard, breed lines (ancestors and genetics) and compatibility. Research the breed of your choice as thoroughly as you can. Don’t be afraid to ask an owner if you can come and see an adult dog beforehand. Never buy a puppy from someone who does not want you to visit the premises. Beware of anyone selling several litters at a time as it is possible that the puppies will not have been socialised correctly. Many people, anxious to own that puppy, ignore warning signs that they are getting less than the dog of their dreams because they are so eager to be an acceptable buyer to the breeder. You are investing a considerable amount of money in getting the best lines, the best health, the best early socialization and training, and the best expert advice and assistance that will be available to you for the life of the dog. Above all do not feel pressurised into buying a puppy. Good breeders will be more than happy for you to come back and decide at a later date, but try and remember not to waste their time as dog breeders have a family life too.
